Relaxation The importance of relaxation in terms of male health cannot be underestimated. Much of the hormonal havoc that is the basis of moderns man's health crisis can be directly or indirectly attributed to our inability to relax. The high levels of stress that we allow to dominate our day to day life impede proper metabolic function, curb tissue growth and regeneration, suppress immune function and generally put a damper on our ability to enjoy life. Combined with the pervasive lack of mobility when we are at work and often throughout our lives leaves men fat, weak and depressed, if not depressing.
Perceived stress causes a series of reactions in the body. One of the most detrimental is elevating the levels of cortisol (the main stress hormone). Cortisol impede proper digestion leading to subtle forms of malnutrition. It also impedes the production of growth hormone and testosterone, the building blocks of health in a man's body.
So you say you relax on the weekend and after work. News flash, sitting in front of the TV or computer is not relaxing. Here we are inundated with “news” that causes us more stress. We watch sports which further raise our blood pressure. Or, we watch movies which also usually involve high stress situations. To be clear I am not suggesting that we give up anyone of these sacred activities instead we must find the time to actively relax.
Sit, stand or lie down and breath deeply. Focus on you body. Breath into areas of tension, feel them expand and allow the tension to be released with you exhale. Some time it helps to tense the area some more as you inhale allowing for a more dramatic release of tension with the out breath. Even 10 minutes a day of the simple exercise can have a profound effect on the rest of our day. By doing this we establish a baseline of relaxation, this allows us to notice when we are getting stressed out and allows us to take evasive action through simply breathing properly. Under normal circumstances this means just taking a few deep breaths. When under physical stress this may involve more advanced techniques.
