There is no one dietary strategy that is going to work for every man to achieve their desired results. First of all there are a number of possible goals and then there are several different types of person and finally there are external circumstances.
Goals Before on embarking on any kind of dietary change it is very important to establish what your goals are. Is your main goal weight loss, muscle gain, strength gain, peace of mind, ethical high ground, or overall health? Sit down and take a moment to write down your goals and prioritize them. To a certain extent this will just be a matter of emphasis. For example muscle gain and fat loss are in general within the same strategy. Not all of your goals are going to work together though. An example of this can be seen in those who want to be ethical eaters and yet gain muscle mass. If your ethics guide you to vegetarianism then you may run in to some stumbling blocks. It is not impossible to gain mass on a vegetarian diet but it is a lot more difficult than if you were eating meat.
Types Dietary strategies have to be adjusted to what type of person you are. By this I do not mean are you a “hard gainer” or a mesomorph. These types can be changed with appropriate dietary and exercise strategies. We are more concerned here with what level of discipline you have and what level of determination and resolution you carry to this endeavor. If you are the type of person who has enormous discipline but will become discouraged if things don't change significantly in the first three months your approach will be very different from one who does not adapt well to change but can stick to some thing for a long time as long as you have some sense of accomplishment. Be brutally honest, assess your strengths and weaknesses, and factor this into your strategy.
Circumstances Here we need to analyze outside factors that may influence you decisions. Do you travel a lot? Are you a husband and father who depends on others to do the cooking? Is your work sedentary or physically demanding? It is unrealistic to craft a strategy that does not take these factors into account. One cannot follow a diet that requires specialized meals if they are not in primary control of the kitchen or constantly traveling.
It is also very important to recognize whether the diet you are crafting is remedial and you plan on switching to another approach once you have achieved certain goals or is it a lifestyle choice which you plan on adhering to indefinitely.
Having assessed all these factors you are now ready to start to plan. You can do this based on your own research or under the guidance of someone capable of helping you put together a workable strategy Regardless of what approach you choose or what dietary strategy you adapt you should know some facts about diet, hormones and health and no book is more well suited to this task than Rob Faigin's Natural Hormonal Enhancement. Whether or not you choose to follow Rob's diet you certainly are going to want to hear what he has to say about the delicate relationship between diet and hormones and you owe it to yourself to have some of the preposterous myths of diet debunked once and for all.
Once again the role of some form of relaxation should be underscored. Many dietary plans fail due to lack of ability to make rational decisions. We are often experiencing such a perpetual level of stress that we feel we do not have the option to eat right. This in turns compounds our stress through improper nutrition and the cycle continues. It is imperative that our dietary changes be accompanied by a commitment to staying relaxed. This can only be done if we establish a baseline of relaxation through practice.
Changing our diet is a monumental undertaking and we should not underestimate the enormity of the task. Before we embark we must be informed, resolute and if at all possible supported through communication with other on the same journey either in person, working with a friend or family member, or through a virtual community such as an online forum.
